Filipino boxer Joebert Delos Reyes was last Friday forced to eat a humble pie when he succumbed to Emmanuel Tagoe in Round Four via a technical knockout in their WBA title fight at the Accra Stadium.
Before the bout, the Filipino bragged that he would knock Tagoe out, as he was adequately prepared for the fight.
However, he visited the canvas two times in Round Four before South African referee Stanley Christodoulou finally counted him out to hand Tagoe the new WBA title.
Responding to why he could not match his words with action, he said after the fight, “I didn’t expect that blow to send me down. He is a good fighter, I admit I have lost. I didn’t know it will end this way because I really prepared.”
The Filipino began on a good note, but his Ghanaian opponent stepped up his game; pursuing the Asian constantly with jabs and occasional hooks.
Strongman Obodai Sai set the tone for the Baby Jet Promotions bouts with a 1m 55seconds technical knockout over Richard Dogbe in their Super Welterweight contest while Prince ‘Octopus’ Dzanie won unanimously against John Oblitey Commey in their National Bantamweight championship fight.
Isaac Aryee wasted no time with his Togolese opponent Malik Sorouna with a first round knockout while Benjamin Lamptey triumphed over Michael Dodoo in their National Light Weight bout.
The final bout of the night saw Frank Dodzie securing a fifth round knockout over Dodzie Kemeh.
Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his family were at ringside to grace the event. He has since left for his UAE base.
