Accra, July 23, GNA - Seven members of the National Amateur Boxing team, the Black Bombers have advanced to the quarter-final stage of the ongoing 16th African Amateur Boxing Championship in Mauritius.
They are Manyo Plange, Prince Octopus Dzane, Issah Samir, Habib Ahmed, Frederick Lawson, Emmanuel Quartey and Ahmed Saraku. Gideon Quartey, Vice Chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) told GNA Sports via telephone from Mauritius that the seven boxers remain the nations' hopes for medals at the continental championship. Lawson, the former African Featherweight champion beat Joseph Mulema of Cameroon 12-6 in their Welterweight clash, whilst Quartey stopped Lemboumba Romeo of Gabon in the third round of their Bantamweight encounter last Tuesday.
Earlier on Monday, Ahmed and Saraku defeated Olivier Cedric of Mauritius and Assane Faye of Senegal 12-9 and 12-10 in the Middleweight and Light heavyweight divisions respectively.
Meanwhile, three boxers; Maxwell Amponsah (Heavyweight), Duke Micah (Light Flyweight) and Raphael Mensah (Featherweight) have been bundled out of the competition.
Amponsah lost narrowly 7-8 to Boya Antoine of Cameroon, Micah lost 11-13 to South African Pilane Lebogang with Mensah defeated by 12-18 to John Colin of Mauritius.
In Wednesday's quarter-final contests, Plange will face Mathela Tankiso of South Africa in the Flyweight division whilst Dzane squares against Haddioui Bradreddine of Mauritius in the Lightweight division. Middleweight Ahmed will battle Hamani Rachid of Algeria. The championship ends on Friday, July 24.
