Tackie Fights Today

Sept. 16 -- Ben "Wonder" Tackie will take on Alfonso Gomez today in a 10 round bout at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Welterweight Alfonso Gomez has slowly evolved into a household name. He will hope to solidify his standing in the Welterweight division.

The Gomez-Tackie bout will be televised live on ESPN, as the Mora-Ayala bout will be on ESPN Classic, the first time a bout will be televised live on the premium channel.

Gomez is coming off a stoppage victory over former world champion and fan favorite Arturo Gatti in July in Atlantic City, NJ. Gomez dominated the action as he broke down Gatti before the bout was stopped in the seventh round.

Tackie, (29-7-1, 17 KO's) from Brooklyn, NY by way of Accra, Ghana, is coming off a controversial 10 round unanimous decision loss to Freddy Hernandez in June. Tackie pressured Hernandez from the start, but was penalized for low blows throughout the bout.
Prior to the Hernandez bout, Tackie had only lost once in seven bouts. In that stretch, Tackie scored victories over Wilfredo Negron and Esau Herrera. Ironically, Tackie has fought someone from the "Contender" show. Tackie fought to a 10 round majority decision draw to Season two semi-finalist Norberto Bravo in September 2005.
Tackie fought for the world title as a Junior Welterweight in 2002, losing a 12 round decision for the unified championship. A year later, Tackie has lost by unanimous decision to Ricky Hatton.
Tackie won his only significant title in 2001, outlasting Ray Oliveira by majority decision that saw over 2,700 punches thrown between the two fighters over 12 rounds.
Gomez, (17-3-2, 8 KO's) from Whittier, CA by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, is unbeaten in his last six bouts. He has stopped his last three opponents in a row. He has not lost since a close seven round unanimous decision loss to Peter Manfredo in September of 2004.
As a participant in the first season of the reality show "The Contender," Gomez became a popular boxer amongst viewers for his blue-collar work ethic and his mellow demeanor. Gomez defeated Jesse Brinkley and Ahmed Kaddour on the show in five round bouts.
A professional since 2001, Gomez had won seven bouts in a row since suffering the defeat to Manfredo. His other two defeats were to contenders Ishe Smith, which was in Gomez' second professional bout, and to Jesse Feliciano.
