Throwback Thursday: Azumah Nelson's first defeat in boxing

On July 21, 1982, Azumah Nelson experienced his first career defeat to Mexican boxer Salvador Sanchez at the Madison Square Garden.

Prior to the bout Azumah Nelson had defeated 13 opponents, beating 9 African opponents, 3 South American's and an European boxer.

The Mexican who was well known for fighting as hard as he has to, fought very hard and scored a 15th-round technical knockout over a tough featherweight named Azumah Nelson.

The Ghanaian Champion came into the ring with bongo drums beating in the aisles of Madison Square Garden to support him. Azumah gave some of his best blows before Referee Tony Perez stopped the thrilling bout at 1:49 of the last round.

Salvador had a difficult night before he successfully defend his World Boxing Council 126-pound title for the ninth time with some very tense moments.

Promoted by the famous Don King, the fight drew 5,575 paying customers, who contributed to a $129,244 gross gate to the Garden's.
