Accra, Oct 26, GNA - A United Kingdom-based boxing club, Haringey Police and Community Boxing Club has officially handed over a state-of-the-art boxing ring to the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA).
The facility worth about 5000 Pounds Sterling is to enhance the Association's activities towards the promotion and development of the sport in the Region.
Kenny Marsh, Treasurer and Events Coordinator of the UK-based Club who handed over the ring to his Ghanaian counterparts last Saturday pledged his outfit's support towards the growth of the sport. Gideon Quartey, Acting Chairman of GAABA commended the England-based team for its kind gesture and appealed to corporate organizations and individuals in the country to emulate the example by supporting amateur boxing.
He commended the National Sports Council (NSC), Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Aviance Ghana Limited for their support towards the Association.
The ring was donated by the UK-based team during their tour of the country last February.
Meanwhile, members of the national amateur boxing team, the Black Bomber were the dominant force during a special contest to climax the ceremony.
Habib Ahmed and Issah Samir, both of the Wisdom Gym defeated Emmanuel Agyiri of Fit Square Gym and Michael Ansah of Square Deal Gym via unanimous decisions in their Middleweight and Lightweight Division contest respectively.
Fit Square's Frederick Lawson, a gold winner at the African Boxing Championships in Libreville, Gabon in 2006 also beat Abraham Afful of Ashaiman Gym via a majority decision in their Welterweight clash. In other bouts involving boxers from Wisdom Gym, Musah Rahman Lawson and Jibril Ahmed defeated Abdul Wahid Oumar and Kofi Acharikawana courtesy unanimous wins in the Flyweight and Middleweight divisions.
