The President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, George Lamptey as a matter of urgency wants the Minister for Youth and Sport to pay a courtesy call on the Black Bombers before the team departs for Dakar on Monday, February 17.

Ten boxers are expected to represent the West African country at the tournament which will give slots for Ghana to participate in boxing at this year’s Tokyo Olympics.

However, the neglect and silence of the sports ministry has become a worry to the national amateur boxing team that has prepared feverishly for the battle ahead.

In an exclusive interview with Ghanaweb, the GBF president said, the federation managed to acquire tickets for ten participating athletes thanks to the benevolence corporate entities and the National Sports Authority.

George Lamptey wants the Sports Ministry to emulate the good send-off ceremonies held by other African countries for their teams ahead of the tournament.

“We are calling on the Minister of Youth and Sports or the deputy Minister to at least pay a courtesy call on the team before we go. In Uganda, their Minister saw the team off and Gabon have gone to East London for preparation,” George Lamptey told Ghanaweb.

He added, “We are pleading with the Minister of Sports, he has done his best but he has to do more so we also congratulate him.”

The GBF President also lamented that the team used part of their monies given by the Ghana Olympic Committee meant for preparation to cater for accommodation fees in Dakar and therefore wants the Sports Ministry to pay arrears of $6,700.
