The 2024 Ghana Oil and Gas Conference & Exhibition provided a vital platform for international energy stakeholders to engage with Ghanaian oil and gas decision-makers, exploring policy updates, partnership opportunities, and strategies to drive the nation's energy sufficiency goals.

Held on September 25 in Accra, the event focused on how the evolving global energy demand, oil production cuts, and the shift toward cleaner energy present both challenges and opportunities for Ghana's upstream petroleum industry.

Ambassador Virginia Palmer, representing the U.S. Government to Ghana as the Guest of Honour, emphasized the importance of the Ghanaian government honoring its commitments to stakeholders to enhance oil exploration progress. The opening session was chaired by Theophilus Ahwireng, Managing Director of MODEC and Vice Chairman of the Ghana Upstream Petroleum Chamber.

The conference primarily aimed to examine the performance of Ghana's upstream industry and share strategies to invigorate the sector.

Four key presentations were made, starting with the 2024 annual report on the industry, which provided a comprehensive overview of the sector's contributions to the economy.

The report also offered recommendations on how to address challenges and leverage opportunities for growth.

The three other presentations, led by Kwaku Boakye Agyei (Operations Director of the Ghana Upstream Petroleum Chamber), Nana Appiah Kyei (Director of Kosmos Energy), and Theophilus Ahwireng (Managing Director of MODEC), discussed ways to monetize Ghana's natural gas resources, deepen local content, and secure financing for Ghanaian service companies.

Each session concluded with actionable recommendations, including the automation of new conveyor systems and encouraging infrastructure-led exploration.

David Ampofo, CEO of the Chamber, officially opened the event, highlighting the industry’s potential for economic growth if supported by timely and effective collaboration with stakeholders.

He stressed the importance of deploying sound policies and eco-friendly technologies to ensure sustainable operations in the sector.

The exhibition also focused on strategies that government and private sector leaders can adopt to navigate the emerging energy landscape, aiming to set Ghana’s energy agenda for the years to come.
