A 3-member delegation from the USAID has paid a visit to the Port of Tema as part of a study related to the West African Transit corridor.

The USAID commissioned an international transit corridor study to seek better understanding of the challenges and opportunities along the Ouagadougou-Tema transit corridor.

The Tema Port Authority is considered as an essential stakeholder regarding the success of the study because of some important roles it has played in the past in ensuring that the transit corridor is devoid of challenges.

It would be recalled that the port authority instituted an investigation along the transit corridor to assess the level of extortion and harassment on the corridor.

Evidence gathered compelled the then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Alhassan to issue an order that no transit truck should be stopped by police officers.

Principal Marketing Officer, Nana Esi Soderberg who received the team emphasized the need for the transit corridor to be without challenges.

The team commended the port authority for the immense role it has played in ensuring that harassment and extortions are minimized on the corridor.

Meanwhile, another delegation from the United States have promised to collaborate with the port authority by sharing a data base which will make it difficult for products which have been rejected, for instance, by the United States to be accepted by Ghana.

This according to them will prevent unwholesome and substandard goods to be brought into Ghana.

The delegation was received by the Director of Tema Port, Jacob Adorkor flanked by some management members.

The Director of Tema Port, Jacob Adorkor stated that the port authority will continue to provide the enabling environment for the various regulatory agencies to play their roles effectively in ensuring healthy standards are not compromised.

The US delegation described as impressive and accomplishing the fact that Ghana’s anchorage is the safest in the West African sub region.

The delegation later visited the Reefer Terminal where frozen items that come through the port are kept in good condition.
