40 students receive support from Goldfields

Goldfields Ghana Limited (GGL), Damang mine, has awarded scholarship to forty brilliant students in its catchment communities.

The award was in respect of the 2014-2015 academic year and includes twenty five beneficiaries in second cycle institutions and fifteen from the tertiary.

The Community Affairs Manager of GGL, Damang mine, Mr. Razak Yakubu, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), noted that, for the eight tertiary students on full scholarship package, each beneficiary will receive GH¢ 2,000.00 and the remaining seven on bursary will be given GH¢ 1,000.00 yearly.

He said for the second cycle schools, ten students on full scholarship will have GH¢ 130.00 annually whilst the other fifteen on bursary will receive GH¢650.00 for the same period.

The Community Affairs Manager explained that, even though the scholarship package is opened to all students whose parents are from the catchment communities, Junior High School students need to obtain an aggregate of 15 or better in the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

He said for applicants seeking to pursue vocational studies, aggregate, not exceeding 24, with demonstrated potential to successfully pursue vocational studies will be considered.

On the part of tertiary students, Mr. Yakubu said a beneficiary need to pass all examinations taken for the Senior High School Certificate Examination and obtain an aggregate of 12 or better.

According to him, preference would be given to applicants seeking to pursue mining related courses, agriculture, medicine, business administration with accounting option, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, human resource, commerce and development studies.

He expressed worry that some parents failed to support their children to attain education beyond the Senior High School level.

Mr. Yakubu entreated parents to ensure that their wards take their studies seriously as GGL; Damang mine will continue to support education in its operational communities.

The community Affairs manager also advised students from their catchment area to take advantage of the mines educational interventions and achieve academic success.
