Government is ready to cut sod for the commencement of construction of 51 factories by the close of the year, an official of the ‘One-District, One-Factory’ secretariat has said.

The move is part of the resolve by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to set up a factory in each of the 216 districts across the country, the Public Relations Officer of ‘1D1F’ said on TV3’s Midday Live on Wednesday.

Kweku Gyasi disclosed that a pineapple factory will be set up in Ekumfi, the home district of late President John Atta Mills, as stated by the president during his recent visit to the place.

Mr Gyasi dismissed reports that the first factory has already been set up, noting that “numerous proposals” have rather been received for takeoff of the project.

He said the secretariat has received over 400 business proposals for factories to be set up across the country.

“This year, all other things being equal, we want to start with 51 factories.”

The policy is one of the flagship programmes of the Akufo-Addo-led government.

It is the foremost policy in the agenda of industrialization espoused by the New Patriotic Party government.

A number of memoranda of understanding (MOUs) have been signed for the setting up of factories in the country.

Already, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Osei Afriyie Akoto, has reached an agreement with the government of Iran for the setting up of a cocoa factory in Ghana.
