Accra, (Greater Accra) 12 Nov., The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) today gave banks, financial institutions and enterprises in the metropolis two weeks to settle their tax obligations with the assembly. Mr. Christopher K. Eleblu, Financial Controller, told GRi in Accra today that the Assembly has launched a crash programme to collect two billion cedis in outstanding taxes from business enterprises. The exercise has so far yielded more than 100 million cedis and businessmen and women have been coming to settle their arrears. ''We are getting a positive response from the rate payers''. The financial controller said so far they have not had any confrontation with the tax payers. Mr. Eleblu warned that when AMA closes down shops and offices, their owners will have ''to pay an interest of 50 per cent on the principal before they will be opened''. The exercise ends on December 18. He said the assembly will close the offices of recalcitrant rate payers.
