AMA to reschedule Sunday market to Saturdays

After persistent complaints from market women about low public patronage of items at the AMA sanctioned Sunday market, officials of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) say they are seriously considering rescheduling to Saturday.

The Sunday market was instituted by the Assembly in December last year to help in addressing the increasing number of traders whose activities causes a lot on inconvenience in the central business districts.

In addition to the frustrating vehicular and human traffic caused by their presence on the pavements, the filth situation has also been worsening.

But the exercise has so far failed to generate the intended results as most of the traders complain that Sunday is not ideal because most people prefer to either spend the day at church or be with family and friends.

An official of at the Public Affairs section of the AMA told the dailyEXPRESS that they are reviewing the decision taking into consideration not only the concerns of the traders but also patrons. Numo Blafo III, an Assistant PRO noted that the Assembly would be coming out with the reviewed decision soon.

?I?m to meet the Chief Executive to put before him the request and I can tell you that we?ll move into action as soon as possible.?

According to Numo Blafo III the exercise was carefully thought about by the AMA before it was mounted and somewhat embraced by some of the traders themselves. He however said the complaints have been carefully examined and the traders would soon be relocated to a different day.

?In fact we have certain markets in areas like Agege in Mamprobi, near Dansoman that are gradually dying because of the refusal of these same traders to do their business there.?

Numo Blafo said the AMA is certain the change in day and date will go a long way to reviving the market spots in those areas. The AMA, he mentioned, has at least 43 markets under its supervision, and is determined to ensure that all of them function properly and effectively.
