Accra, Dec. 20, GNA - The management of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), acting for and on behalf of Ghana Water Company Limited, said on Monday it would embark on a nation-wide exercise to demolish and/or remove any unusually large underground water storage reservoirs, especially underground tanks, that are being used to sell water and other illegal water supply activities.

A statement signed in Accra by Mr Stanley Martey, AVRL Communications Manager, said the action was in line with the company's policy to ensure equitable distribution of water within the supply area. It said it had been noted that the operators of these facilities had disrupted the distribution operations thereby depriving other customers from getting water through their pipes. This had also led to a substantial revenue loss to the company since most of the operators indulged in illegal activities, the statement said. "These situations coupled with the unhygienic conditions of some storage tanks have made it necessary for this important exercise," the statement said.

AVRL said the Municipal/District Assemblies, the Ghana Police Service and the judiciary would support it to implement the policy to the fullest. "AVRL is, however, increasing the number of tanker filling points at strategic locations where water tankers can fill their tanks for supply," the statement added.
