Accra, June 17, GNA -The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana, on Thursday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a three billion cedis Accountancy Village Complex for Bankers at Okponglo near Accra.
Facilities at the complex would include administration block, auditorium, lecture hall, welfare block, clubhouse, tennis court, hostel, parking lot and fitness centre.
Mr. Asiedu Mantey, Deputy Governor, Bank of Ghana, who performed the ceremony, commended the Institute for its vision to invest in the project.
Mr E. Boakye-Agyeman, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Banking, in an address said the institute had over the past 40 years maintained its vision as the prime centre for the professional development of the banking sector and its staff.
"It is against this background that we have tried to maintain a high standard of professional skills among members engaged in the practising of banking, through the promotion of professional banking education."
Mr Boakye-Agyeman noted that the Institute has now become an alternative tertiary institution for students who for one reason or the other could not gain admission into the universities.
The Institute started in 1963 as a club for members and acted as a forum for regular interaction and exchange of ideas amongst the banking professionals.
The members later decided to run the professional course in banking in affiliation with the then Institute of Bankers United Kingdom, now the Chartered Institute of Bankers United Kingdom. 17 June 04
