Accra, Dec 8, GNA - The score board at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra is to be moved to the EL-Wak Sports Stadium as part of the general plans by the Sports Ministry to up grade the facility to host international events.

The contraction job, which has been awarded to Michelete and Company Limited, who have also won the right to refurbish the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium will include the provision of facilities like changing rooms, toilet facilities, tartan tracks and possibly new flood lights. Mr Charles Aryeh, Acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) in an interview with the GNA Sports said the up-grading works, which is scheduled to start soon is expected to last for four months.

He said the reason for the upgrading of the facilities was because the venue is now going to be the main hob for athletics in Accra as the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium is going to concentrate solely on soccer. The Sports Council boss also said the EL-Wak stadium is likely to be the venue to host continental club matches of Accra Hearts of Oak and Berekum Arsenals and would have to win the approval of inspectors of the Confederations of African Football (CAF) who would soon be in the country to inspect the facility.

Hearts will be participating in the CAF Champions League whilst Arsenals will make their continental debut in the CAF Confederations Cup competition.

The Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, the traditional home of Hearts for such continental matches, will be closed down from December 31 to facilitate the start of the refurbishment works towards the hosting of the 2008 African Cup of Nations.
