The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has underscored the need for Africa to pool its resources to unlock scale and drive cost-efficient energy financing across the continent.

According to him, the existence of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) provides a clear pathway for Ghana and the rest of the continent to achieve a smooth and efficient power supply.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit (WA-ECS) 2025 on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Jinapor noted that WAPP has successfully synchronised the West African power grid—temporarily linking the Ghana-Togo-Benin network with Nigeria as one unified system.

He added that a permanent synchronisation strategy is currently underway to stabilise the region’s power market fully.

"From 04:04h to 08:14h, WAPP successfully conducted a synchronisation trial at the Sakete substation in Benin. This resulted in the first-ever full synchronisation of the entire West African power grid—temporarily linking the Ghana-Togo-Benin network with Nigeria as one unified system. The trial has since ended, and the gathered data is being analysed to inform a permanent synchronisation strategy, marking a significant leap towards our regional power market," he stated.

To secure cheaper electricity financing, Jinapor called for a shift towards an interconnected and more regulated energy mix to safeguard the continent's resources and improve power generation.

"For too long, our energy systems have operated in isolation, undermining our collective resilience. Today, we must move with urgency towards a fully interconnected, interoperable, and inclusive energy system," he added.

Ghana and Nigeria have been trading natural gas through the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) for some time now. Ghana also exports combined power from Nigeria to other neighbouring countries.
