Airtel mourns Mills

Leading global telecommunications company, Bharti Airtel (Airtel) has expressed shock and disbelief at the sudden demise of Ghana’s President John Evans Atta Mills.

In a statement, the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa (International) and Joint Managing Director of Bharti Airtel Limited, Manoj Kohli, said: “We are sorry to learn of the President’s passing, and we would want to express our sympathy to the family of the late President, the Government and the people of Ghana.”

It said Airtel profoundly remembered the late President Mills’ commitment to his country, especially in providing educational infrastructure when he helped in commissioning in November 2011, the teaching facility for the Medical School of the University of Cape Coast constructed by Airtel, which Mr. Kohli commissioned with him”.

Mr. Kohli added: “Indeed one of the President’s last public functions was the commissioning of a three-storey classroom block in Accra, where Airtel is partnering other institutions to provide internet connectivity to the ICT centre there.”

He expressed the belief that the legacy of the late President would provide additional epitome for the onward growth of the country.

The Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, Philip Sowah said: “We were shocked when the news of the President’s death filtered through social media on Tuesday. All our staff, both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians has been saddened by the news. We express our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President, the Government and indeed the good people of Ghana. We believe that our dear President will find absolute solace in the arms of his creator.”**
