Airtel Ghana is to rehabilitate the two-unit classroom blocks of the Adaklu Abuadi Salvation Army Kindergarten School in the Volta Region which was destroyed in a rainstorm two years ago.
Airtel Ghana said in a statement issued in Accra on Monday that, the mobile communication company would turn the dilapidated two-unit structure into three-units and provide the school with learning materials, desks and a play park.
The pupils have for the past two years been holding classes under trees.
Airtel said its attention was drawn to the plight of the school, which is located in Abuadi, one of the 40 communities of the newly created Adaklu District, when a teacher of the school, Yvonne Tsahey, wrote to Airtel Ghana to come to the aid of the school, as part of Airtel Ghana’s corporate social responsibility initiative, Touching Lives.
Mr Philip Sowah, Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, explained that renovation of the block to a three-unit classroom and provision of learning materials was part of Airtel’s initiative at making a sustainable impact in the lives of people, especially the needy.
He reiterated that “We have said it time and again that when we provide support of any kind, our focus is to look at how sustainable and impactful the support is; there is no better way of ensuring the sustainability of an initiative than to invest in the education of the future of our nation,” he added.
Head of Corporate Communications and External Affairs of Airtel Ghana, Donald Gwira, said: “Airtel Ghana has taken this initiative to touch the lives of these children and the entire community in order to transform their lives and help them have a better life in future.”
Mr Gwira added: “At seeing the children, filled with joy and their readiness to learn even though they did not have the necessary tools to do so, brought a throb to our hearts and that was when we decided to expand our benevolence by supporting these children in order to encourage them to study and put smiles on their faces.”
Airtel’s Touching Lives, which is currently in its second season, has so far supported artisans, communities and persons going through challenging times in their daily lives.
The series is showing on Metro TV, TV3, TV Africa, Viasat 1 and Adom TV, on Multi TV throughout the week.**
