Akandoh demands distribution plan for coronavirus PPE

Ranking Member of Parliament’s committee on Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, wants parliament to summon the Health Minister to present a plan for the distribution of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to health workers in the country.

This is due to what he describes as a lack of a proper distribution plan of the PPEs.

He says stocking the equipment in Accra when professionals on the field are in need of it is not the right thing to do.

“The Minister Responsible for Health must appear on the Floor of the House to give us the distribution list of the PPE. It is very important because we are not in normal times and people are complaining all over,” the Member of Parliament for Juaboso told the media in parliament on Wednesday.

Mr Akandoh believes government is not doing enough to protect the front liners and citizenry as a whole.

The MP’s demand comes after the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu raised similar concerns on the floor of parliament.

Mr Iddrisu said the Health Minister needs to brief the house on how his outfit is managing the situation on ground relative to the money and items donated by various institutions.

“I also understand that the Chinese government gave some assistance to the Republic. The Minister of Health will have to come to this House to apprise us on how he is dealing with matters relating to that and how the distribution relative to the need for PPE to support them [Health Workers] is going.”

But Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Freda Prempeh says Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s claims are unfounded.

“For my colleague in Parliament to say that this government and for that matter, the President is not doing enough is not surprising,” she retorted to the media.
