The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that two generating units at the Akosombo Dam have been restored, following recent disruptions to the power supply.

This follows a recent fire incident at the Akosombo Substation, an incident that has disrupted power evacuation and generation.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, April 27, 2026, he said engineers have made progress in bringing the units back into operation after emergency technical works.

“I am pleased to report that through emergency technical interventions and shared determination, the first generating unit was successfully restored yesterday. This afternoon, I just received confirmation that the second unit has also been successfully synchronised, bringing the total to two units as I address you.

“Work is actively ongoing to bring the third and remaining units back into operation as quickly and safely as possible,” he said.

The minister noted that the situation has affected power supply across the country due to challenges at the Akosombo Dam, which remains Ghana’s largest source of electricity generation.

“This unfortunate and unprecedented disaster, which has resulted in the temporary curtailment of power from our largest generation source, the Akosombo Dam, has led to severe supply challenges not witnessed in recent times,” he stated.

He also attributed the swift work to engineers and technical teams working to restore full operations at the facility.

“... I wish to take this opportunity to commend and salute our engineers and technical teams who have remained on site, working tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions to restore the system to full operation.

“Your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment in the face of this challenging situation are truly commendable,” he stated.
