The Ghana Union of Traders says it has closed all possible avenues for dialogue between itself and the Nigerian Union of Traders Ghana (NUTAG).

In a press release issued by the unions General Secretary, Alpha Shaban in reaction to a press conference organised by NUTAG, it said the behaviour and conduct of NUTAG including the description of members of GUTA as thugs has “in effect closed all possible avenues of dialogue with GUTA.”

Describing itself as a very responsible and reputable organization known worldwide that conducts its activities in a civilized manner, the statement labelled the conduct of NUTAG as sad and unfortunate.

Over the years GUTA has been pushing for the enforcement of Ghanaian laws meant to keep foreigners out of retail business in the country. According to GUTA the liberty to have the retailing space in the country to itself is an inalienable right of Ghanaian citizens which does not contravene any international treaty, including the ECOWAS protocol on the free movement of people and goods.

The position by GUTA has for some time now caused a rift between GUTA and NUTAG, which has sometimes resulted in confrontations and the forceful locking up of Nigerian retail shops in the country.
