Bibiani (W/R), March 17, GNA - AngloGold Ashanti Bibiani has stepped up its safety, health and environment measures to justify its rating as an International Standard Organisation (ISO 14001) mine. The ISO 14001 is a coded award given to mining companies that satisfy all safety, environment and health standards.

Mr Peter Amponsah-Mensah, the General Manager of the company, said this when he led officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mines Department and newsmen round a tailings dam constructed by the company at Bibiani.

The dam is described as one of the biggest or largest well-managed tailings dam in West Africa.

Mr Amponsah-Mensah said even though the company had not experienced any spillage since its inception, it had put in place mechanisms to achieve zero effluence to the environment.

Mr Dapaah Kodua, Environmental Supervisor of the company, said despite the various management principles and procedures, the company always tries to attain perfection and there is quality auditing to ensure that there is no effluent discharge.

The company has trained 20 community first aid providers to attend to emergency domestic accidents within its catchments areas.
