An angry customer of uniCredit Ghana Limited, the savings and loans arm of the now-defunct uniBank, on Tuesday, 20 November 2018, blocked the entrance to the firm’s Ridge Head Office in Accra with his car, as part of his personal efforts to get the company to pay him his deposit, as well as the deposits of several dozen others who thronged the office on the same day to demand their monies.

The customers say they have been unable to make withdrawals for over a month now, a situation they describe as unbearable.

Mr Kofi Agyei, who blocked the company’s entrance with his car, vowed never to allow any car to enter or leave the premises until he got his over GHS30, 000 from uniCredit.

Speaking to Class News, Mr Agyei said: “I’ve been saving with uniCredit for some time now, but since September, I’ve been trying to get money for my contract but when I come, they say: ‘Come tomorrow, we’ll organise it for you, come today we’ll organise it for you’. I was here last week and they assured me they will pay my money but they didn’t. So, I’m still here and I even blocked the entrance with my car, I’ll not allow any car to enter”.

According to Mr Agyei, the managers of uniCredit have said they can only afford to give him GHS5,000 of his over GHS30,000 deposit, but he has refused to take the money until the mangers of the facility sign an undertaken to pay him his full deposit at an agreed date.

Last month, a frustrated man who had his money locked up at the Apenkwa branch of the same uniCredit company in Accra stormed the office with his mattress and baggage and vowed to sleep over until he had received his deposit. A video of the man offloading his personal effects at the office went viral on social media.
