The Senior Staff Association of Volta River Authority (VRA) has said they will resist any attempt by the government to merge their outfit with the Electricity Company of Ghana, Bui Power Authority, and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO).

They contend that the planned merger is not in the best interest of Ghanaians and could compromise the VRA’s critical contributions to the national grid and energy security.

They therefore asked the government to make a public declaration on the withdrawal of a proposed bill.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of VRA, Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, indicated that the Volta River Authority will continue to withstand the merger and ensure the bill is withdrawn.

He stressed that VRA will continue to provide reliable and affordable electricity to Ghanaians.

“The Minister said he’s going to do the right thing. We’re expecting the minister, as early as possible today, to issue that statement so that we can also bring down our curtains and continue to work and continue to protect the VRA. The VRA is the premium institution, in the bloodline of this country, in terms of our economy and national security, and we can never allow anybody to dismember the VRA. Any attempts to dismember VRA will be resisted.

“We, the staff of VRA and the good people of this country, are prepared to fight for the sustenance of the VRA and to continue to provide reliable and affordable electricity to the people of the country,” Theophilus Tetteh Ahia stated.

The proposal of the merger of VRA, ECG, NEDCO, and Bui Power Authority, if effected, will see the creation of an independent Thermal Power Authority from VRA’s thermal plant.

The Ministry of Energy is also pushing for a Thermal Authority Bill, Ghana Hydro Authority Bill, Ghana Power Distribution Authority Bill, Ghana Nuclear Power Corporation Bill, and Ghana Energy Regulatory Authority Bill.
