Traders in the Ashaiman Municipal of the Greater Accra Region, have complained that their businesses are grinding to the halt as a result of poor sales coupled with bad roads as Christmas and the New Year festivities approach.
The traders who spoke to SVTV Africa said though the trend is a recurring one around this time of the year, this year’s situation is the worst they have experienced in a long time as Ghana celebrates farmer's day.
Corn dough and tomato sellers were among the most hit by the situation.
"Now people are not buying foodstuff as it used to be. When we came here some years ago we were making sales, but now is not moving," a trader identified as Aunty Esi said.
Madam Patience who also sells Corn dough and other foodstuffs at the Ashaiman Mandela market’s plight is not different from Aunty Esi. She said, she used to sell two or more buckets in the same market some years ago, but that cannot be said within three years after they were relocated.
Similar sentiments were shared by other traders who are into the same business. They complained business has slowed down and they could not stop though, for they need to survive.
They appealed to the government as a matter of urgency to turn the situation around as it is gradually pushing them out of business.
Meanwhile, many of the traders also complained about the haphazard nature of the road from various points to the markets.
Other traders also complained about the chaotic disposal of both solid and liquid waste in the market making trading activities in the area very uncomfortable and also made passionate appeals to the local authorities to take action to save the big market from the filth that is swallowing up the market.
