Saltpond, July 15, GNA - The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, Mr. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, has appealed to the Bank of Ghana (BOG) to replace the one pesewa coin with a bigger unit and minted with quality material.
He said the one pesewa coin was fast ceasing to be legal tender because of its quality and size.
"People, especially traders, no longer accept them," he told the GNA in an interview.
Mr. Quansah appealed to the BOG to change the name of the nation's currency from Ghana Cedi to cedi because it is only Ghana that uses the currency.
He said the dollar is referred to as American Dollar or Canadian Dollar because more them one country use it and since it is only Ghana that uses the cedi there is no need to prefix it with Ghana. "It is over two years since the redenomination exercise was carried out and the old cedi is out of circulation, therefore calling the currency the cedi would not create any confusion," Mr Quansah said.
