Accra, March 28. GNA - Barclays Bank Ghana Limited on Tuesday presented a 100 million cedis cheque to support the University of Ghana's Student's Financial Aid.
Mr Amoo Mensah, Barclays Bank Manager of the Legon Branch, who presented the cheque, said the money would be released in five instalments to assist needy students, operate scholarship and prize schemes for bright students.
The first instalment, covering 20 million cedis was presented on Tuesday in Accra by Mr Mensah who said, the Bank was committed to the society in which it lived and to help the economy adding that the appeal for support from the Financial Aid came at the right time. Professor Clifford Nii Boye Tagoe, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, who received the money, said some students had difficulty in settling their academic user fees adding that the University had offered such students scholarship.
He said the University had admitted 280 brilliant but needy students this academic year, with support from proceeds of the fund. He appealed to corporate bodies, individuals and the civil society to support the Aid and commended the Bank for being the first to respond to the students' appeal.
Mrs Kokui Adu, Head of the Financial Aid Office, said the office established last academic year, had been supported by corporate bodies, but had not yet received any support from the Government.
