Bawumia Appointed Deputy Governor of BOG

His Excellency, President John Agyekum Kufuor, has appointed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, effective June 1, 2006. He replaces Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu-Mante who retires at the end of this month.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is currently the Head of the Monetary Policy Analysis and Financial Stability Department of the Bank of Ghana and in this role has been instrumental to the workings of the Bank?s Monetary Policy Committee since its inception. He is also the Special Assistant to the Governor.

Born on 7th October 1963, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia attended Tamale Secondary School and obtained his Bachelor?s (First Class Honours), Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Buckingham University (U.K), Oxford University (Lincoln College), UK, and Simon Fraser University (Canada) respectively. He also holds a Chartered Institute of Bankers (U.K) diploma (ACIB). His research interests are in the areas of Monetary Policy, Exchange Rates and Economic Growth.

Prior to joining the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Bawumia was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Baylor University (Texas) from 1996-2000. He also worked as an economist in the research department of the International Monetary Fund. Dr. Bawumia has published several articles in internationally refereed journals as well as book chapters.
