Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has emphasised the importance of safeguarding the Cedi while preparing for the future of currency.

Delivering remarks at the Cedi@60 International Currency Conference held in Accra on November 18, 2025, Dr Asiama highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana’s payment systems and develop the eCedi, while re-anchoring the national currency to resist pressures from currency substitution and dollarisation.

He also called for collaboration with global partners to strengthen trust, security, and efficiency in both physical and digital forms of money.

Cedi's relevance must be preserved amid digital payment growth - BoG Governor

“From its earliest days, the Cedi carried the confidence of a young republic charting its own economic destiny. Over the decades, it has mirrored Ghana’s triumphs and struggles, helping families plan, businesses grow, and communities support one another,” the BoG Governor said.

He stressed the need to prepare the Cedi for a rapidly evolving financial landscape shaped by digital payments, tokenised instruments, and advances in artificial intelligence.

“Young Ghanaians are growing up in a world where digital interaction is second nature. Our responsibility is to ensure that the Cedi, however accessed, continues to serve their aspirations,” he added.

“Protecting the Cedi is not the task of any one institution; it is a shared endeavor rooted in our belief in Ghana’s future,” the BoG Governor emphasised.

The Cedi@60 International Currency Conference conference brings together central bankers, payment specialists, currency designers, technology providers, academics, and industry leaders to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and innovations in currency and payments.

The two-day event is part of Ghana’s year-long Cedi@60 celebrations, reflecting on the national currency’s sixty-year history and its role in the country’s economic development.
