The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has warned the public against dealing with 20 mobile loan applications operating without the required licence or authorisation from the central bank.
The warning forms part of efforts by the BoG to clean up Ghana’s digital credit sector and protect consumers from loan providers operating outside the country’s regulatory framework.
Why Ghana attracts investor interest but struggles to turn commitments into actual inflows
In a notice issued on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the Bank, Aimee Vyda Quashie, the central bank listed the 20 digital credit service providers.
The Bank of Ghana said the operations of the listed entities violate regulatory requirements governing digital credit services in Ghana.
It said some of the activities raise concerns about customer data privacy, consumer protection and compliance with established regulatory standards.
The central bank noted that the activities contravene the Directive for Digital Credit Service Providers in Ghana, issued in September 2025.
The BoG said it would continue working with relevant state institutions to identify and investigate unlicensed digital credit providers and take appropriate enforcement action against them.
It also urged members of the public to avoid engaging with loan providers that do not have the necessary authorisation from the central bank.
The warning also extends to banks, specialised deposit-taking institutions and payment service providers.
Members of the public who come across the activities of unlicensed loan providers have been encouraged to report them to the Bank of Ghana.
