Gold reserves at the Bank of Ghana have increased to 36.02 tonnes at the end of August 2025.

This was a jump from the 34.40 tonnes recorded in July 2025.

In the same period in 2024, the reserves stood at 25.97 tonnes, representing the rapid accumulation within a year.

According to data from the Bank of Ghana, gold reserves have steadily risen since May 2023, when the gold purchase programme began.

Since then, the reserves have moved from 8.78 tonnes to 36.02 tonnes as of August 2025.

The surge has been attributed primarily to the domestic gold purchase programme.

The increase in the BoG's reserves has helped in stabilising the cedi and reducing the over-reliance on external forex.

According to the Central Bank, the expansion of the country's gold reserves forms part of wider efforts to strengthen macroeconomic stability and improve the balance of payments, especially amid global commodity price swings and currency pressures.
