The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is providing an amount of one-million US dollars ($1,000,000.00) towards the completion of the University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) Faculty of Art’s language laboratory.

The project started in 2008 with UCC’s internally generated funds but stalled some couple of months ago due to lack of funds. This formed part of the UCC’s 50th Anniversary projects.

When completed, the building will have facilities such as 16 offices, nine language labs of various sizes, a museum, auditorium, conference room, computer lab, grand lounge, restaurant, a library, director’s office and kitchenette.

Mr Kwesi Amissah Arthur, Governor of BoG who cut the sod on Thursday for the continuation of the project, said the project will facilitate practical works of the arts faculty and provide opportunity for students in the Sub Region to have access to it.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Vice Chancellor (VC) of UCC said, it was difficult sourcing for funds for the humanities but easier for the sciences and expressed gratitude to the BoG for the gesture.

She explained that originally, the course was to be both written and oral, but due to the lack of a lab, the oral aspect which deals with presentation skills could not be achieved, adding that with the construction of the project, students will be trained to acquire practical skills.

The VC said, the lab was to now help the students reach their friends in the Sub Region and West Africa at large, to learn from others to enrich their presentation skills.

Rev Prof Emmanuel Adow Obeng, immediate past vice chancellor of UCC, who presided over the function said, when completed, the teaching of languages by the UCC will be “unbeatable” in the country.**
