Accra, Sept. 12, GNA - Nana Juaben-Boaten Siriboe, Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning on Friday called for establishment of more research institutions to develop policy ideas for national development.

Nana Siriboe said the activities of research institutions served as guide to policy makers in initiating development policy for a country. Nana Siriboe, who made the call at a launch of a book on the economy of Ghana, said the country was faced with multiple policy changes as efforts were being made to ensure structural development for effective economic development.

He advocated for a Growth and poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS iii) to replace GPRS ii as the latter drew to an end.

The book titled; The Economy of Ghana: Analytical Perspective on Stability, Growth and Poverty was edited by Professor Ernest Aryeetey of the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research of the University of Ghana and Professor Ravi Kanbur of the Cornell University. The book traces the economic history of Ghana from independence to the present and also offers the way forward for the country's economy. In his comment, Professor Ravi Kanbur said how to manage the high and growing level of inequality without destabilizing the economy was a definite challenge that Ghana needed to deal with in the next decade. He said while official poverty statistics had been on decline, the inequalities had widened, meaning that economic growth had not translated into meaningful standard of living for the people. 12 Sept, 08
