Bosomtwi-Sam Harbour to get cold store and fish processing plants

Sekondi, June 7, GNA - The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GHAPOHA) will construct Cold Storage Facilities and Fish Processing Plants at the Albert Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour (ABSFH) at Essikadu, near Sekondi before December 2004.

Negotiations between the GHAPOHA and the Essikadu Stool has been completed for the conversion of an Old European Cemetery at Essikadu for the project, Mr Nestor Galley, Director of the Takoradi Port, said at a Press Conference organised to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the ABSFH at Takoradi.

He said the construction of a walkway and an old landing bay would be re-organised and developed to facilitate the work of fishermen and other users of the harbour.

Mr Galley said a second phase of the ABSFH would begin as soon as a Japanese team of inspectors releases a report on the Harbour. He said the Japanese Government financed the Harbour in 1995 at the cost of 13.5 million dollars.

It was meant to provide a modern fish Landing and handling support facilities and services for inshore boats and large canoes. Mr Galley said the harbour currently provided employment for between 10,000 and 15,000 within the Shama Ahanta East Metropolis and its environs daily.

He called on all stakeholders to work hard and ensure that the harbour and its facilities are protected to enable others to benefit from it.
