The Bui Power Authority (BPA) has raked in over US$335million as revenue from the sale of power to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) since the commissioning of its 400 MW Generating Station in December 19, 2013.

This was contained in a document which was made available to mynewsgh.com by the Authority.

Speaking to the Press at a Breakfast Meeting in Accra the Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power Authority Mr. Fred Oware dismissed the notion by some players in the energy sector that Bui Power Authority had become a white elephant since its establishment in 2007.

According to him, Bui Power is a healthy power generating entity stressing that “We cannot be described as a white elephant when we are generating so much electricity to feed into the national grid.”

Statistics from the Bui Power Authority indicates that the Authority generated 616MW of power in 2014, 868MW in 2015, 293 MW in 2016 and 542MW in 2017.

Touching on the development, Mr. Fred Oware attributed it, to what he described as the decline in the level of water in the Dam.

He told the Press that BPA had positioned itself as the leading Renewable Energy leaders powering green energy for the country.

“BPA, this year, expanded focus to Renewable Energy. This was in line with the Ministry of Energy’s vision of increasing the Renewables to about 10% of the country’s energy mix. This means we should be looking at adding at least 500MW of renewable energy to the country’s energy generation. In this regard, BPA has expanded its Switchyard at the Bui GS to accommodate 250MW of solar- generated power.

“BPA will be the first hybrid generation plant by the end of 2018, combining hydro and solar power generation. The Authority intends to train more of its engineers and other staff in pursuing and accomplishing this very important task of meeting the Ministry of Energy’s target for Renewable Energy generation,” Mr. Fred Oware said.

Mr. Fred Oware explained that BPA is also prospecting six possible sites for solar power generation in the three Northern Regions, commencing a 30kV generation from the Tsatsadu Falls in Volta Region and working with GS- Wind and University of Ghana on wind energy generation.
