As part of the government’s efforts to ensure all public institutions go solar, the Bui Power Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ghana for the construction of a 2.5-Megawatt solar power plant in the coming months.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Mr Fred Oware, a feasibility study will soon be conducted for the smooth take off of the initiative.

Speaking to Class Business after signing the agreement, Mr Oware said: “We, first of all, have to conduct the studies and the studies will be determined by their own needs and what percentage they want the solar to occupy in terms of the energy mix that the university wants to use.

“We have to do a number of tests, including geotechnical tests, to determine the type of equipment that we’ll use. We’ll look at the terrain, the kind of civil works that need to be done to be able to get the right angles you’ll want to place all your panels.

“So, it’s a bit too early, so, we think that about a month or so, we’ll be able to conclude the initial studies and once we sit down with them and agree on the financials, then we will be able to determine the actual cost of the project.”

For his part, the Dean for the School of Engineering Science of the University of Ghana, Prof. Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, said the novelty will significantly impact the School’s electricity consumption.
