Burkina Faso commits $1.2m to Tema warehouse project

Tema, Nov. 9, GNA- The volume of transit traffic at the Ghana Ports increased from 8,500 tonnes in 1997, to 831,000 tonnes in 2003 representing an approximate increase of 2,800 per cent. The Deputy Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, Dr Gheysika Agambila who made this known in Tema said Burkina Faso alone accounted for about 329,530 tonnes of the traffic.

He made this known during a sod-cutting ceremony for an estimated 1.2 million- dollar warehouse and offices for the Burkina Faso Chamber of Commerce.


The 6,000 square metre capacity project is a collaborative effort between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Dr Agambilla said three warehouses with 3,000 tonnes capacity each were under construction at Takoradi while plans are afoot to construct railways from Kumasi to Paga to facilitate the transportation of goods. He said Ghana, as a gateway to West Africa had to construct the needed facilities to accommodate the increasing traffic.


Dr Agambilla described trade amongst Ghana and Burkina Faso as very critical in the development of bilateral relations. In a speech read on his behalf, the President of the Burkina Faso Chamber of Commerce, Alhaji Oumarou Kanazoe commended Ghana for facilitating the brisk business between the two countries.
