The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike, set to begin on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, in response to the government's failure to fulfill key agreements made in previous negotiations.

This decision followed an emergency meeting of CETAG’s National Council on Friday, December 20, 2024, which discussed the government's repeated breaches of commitments, particularly regarding the implementation of a compulsory arbitration award handed down by the National Labour Commission (NLC) on May 2, 2023.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 23, CETAG expressed growing frustration over the government’s inaction, accusing it of neglecting the terms of agreements made in good faith, which they claim have adversely affected both members’ welfare and the wider education sector.

Previously, CETAG had suspended a planned strike on August 20, 2024, after receiving assurances from high-level government officials, including the Vice President, the Minister for Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, and the Minister of Education. These assurances culminated in an agreement signed on August 19, 2024.

However, the union now argues that the government has failed to honor the terms of this agreement, leaving them with no option but to resume industrial action. CETAG is calling on key stakeholders in the education sector, including the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), affiliate universities, and the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), to intervene urgently in order to prevent any further disruption to the academic calendar.

In its statement, CETAG emphasized that all diplomatic avenues have been exhausted and urged immediate action to resolve the situation before it escalates further.
