Accra, July 14, GNA – The Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina T. Wood has directed Commercial Courts in Accra and Kumasi to operate during this year’s legal vacation from August 1 to September 30.

The directive was based on requests from the business community for the commercial courts to hear their cases during the legal vacation mindful of the economic and financial implications on their businesses, with reference to interest rates on their transactions.

A statement signed by Mr Alex B. Poku-Acheampong, Judicial Secretary in Accra on Wednesday said, “In so doing, the Judiciary will be working to reduce the backlog of cases pending at the commercial courts.

“At the same time it will give critical support to the Government’s agenda to market Ghana as a business-friendly destination, build confidence in the domestic economy, enhance foreign direct investment and improve the general business climate of the country.”

The statement said Judges in the Commercial Courts would therefore not take their legal vacation en bloc and urged the bar and general public who had cases pending as well as their witnesses, to support the directive and cooperate with the Judiciary to attain the noble objectives that underpinned the directive.
