Accra, Sept. 23, GNA - Mr Anthony Fofie, Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has been appointed as Chairman of the International Cocoa Council for the 2010/11 cocoa year. A statement issued by Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) in Accra on Thursday said the election was during the 82nd regular session of the International Cocoa Council held in London from September 13-17. It said before this appointment, he was Chairman of the International Cocoa organization's (ICCO) Executive Committee for the 2009/10 cocoa year. "Mr Fofie was endorsed because of his solid reputation and experience not only in Ghana but within the global cocoa industry," he statement said. In his acceptance speech, Mr Fofie pledged to work hard in his capacity as Chairman of the Council to support the ICCO to achieve a sustainable cocoa economy. He solicited the support and co-operation of the entire membership of the organization to enable them to achieve their common objective. The International Cocoa Council is the highest decision-making body of the organization and is composed of all contracting parties to the International Cocoa Agreement. Council sessions are attended by delegations of all accredited cocoa producing and cocoa consuming member countries. The Consultative Board on the World Cocoa Economy, whose membership includes experts from the private sector, participate as observers as do delegations from non-member countries, cocoa sector associations and international organizations. The main function of the Council is to determine the strategy of the Organization in addition to supervising its financial policies as well as reviewing and approving its proposed work programme and budget for each cocoa year. It is the body to which the different committees and working groups report. The London-based ICCO established in 1973 is a global organization, composed of both cocoa producing and cocoa consuming countries. The mandate of ICCO is to work towards a sustainable world cocoa economy.
