The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has encouraged users to report any service provider that fails to launch the 5G network by 31 December this year.

According to her, 5G has the potential to drive growth across various sectors, including banking, agriculture, and more. She noted that the arrival of 5G in Ghana is a major milestone for the nation’s telecommunications landscape.

Speaking at the 5G network launch on November 1 2024, she stated: “We embrace the fifth generation, 5G, of communication networks. The potential of 5G extends beyond mere development; it is a revolutionary leap forward that promises to redefine connectivity, productivity, and the overall quality of life.”

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful also announced that Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi will immediately begin experiencing 5G services as providers launch the network, with other regions expected to follow by the end of 2024.

The Minister added that her team is collaborating with telecom providers to introduce affordable data plans for consumers.

“Hold your network provider accountable because they must make this service available to you,” she concluded.

The 5G license has been awarded to Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a government-backed infrastructure company formed in collaboration with leading firms such as Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.

This public-private partnership aims to establish affordable, high-speed connectivity across the nation, expanding access to underserved regions and boosting digital inclusivity.

NGIC’s phased rollout will commence in major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi before extending to additional urban centers by year-end.

Additionally, the government has set 2026 as the target for achieving full nationwide 5G coverage, including rural areas.

NGIC’s infrastructure is expected to enable telecom providers to deliver 5G services efficiently, fostering growth and innovation.
