New Kegyaase (Ash), June 19, GNA- Major Courage Quashiga (rtd), Minister of Food and Agriculture, has asked Regional and District Directors of the ministry to develop an effective plan for the rearing of guinea fowls in rural areas.
"Let us see how quickly we can spread the rearing of guinea fowls in the country", he said.
He said this when he paid a working visit to Asamoa and Yamoa Farms at New Kegyaase producers of day-old chicks, guinea fowls, dressed guinea fowls and table eggs at Santaasi near Kumasi on Saturday. Major Quashiga charged the directors to mobilise people in the districts to be trained in the rearing of guinea fowl.
He said now that it had been found that guinea fowl could be produced in large quantities, his ministry would be prepared to sponsor interested people to go into the industry.
The Minister asked the directors to sensitise their people on the rearing of guinea fowls so as to get those interested to be introduced to the industry.
He commended Mr Joseph Asamoa-Ntim, Managing Director of the farms who he said in spite of being a biochemist, entered into livestock rearing and said such people must be encouraged.
"Most of the foods and other items imported from outside the country for consumption are not fresh. They get into the country when they are about reaching their expiry dates".
"If therefore we can get fresh foods in the country, we must encourage production", he added.
Mr Asamoa-Ntim and his brother, Mr Kwabena Ntim, conducted the Minister round the farms, which produces 2,500 day-old guinea fowls a week.
Mr Asamoa-Ntim told the Minister that the mortality rate of the day-old guinea fowl was less than fowls.
