Chaos at Elubo border

An articulated transit truck carrying several hundreds of sacks of cola nuts from Côte d'Ivoire enroute to Nigeria somersaulted on Tuesday morning in front of the immigration check point at the Elubo border causing heavy vehicular traffic at the border.

The accident, which happened a day after the Ghana Immigration Service denied widely speculated media reports that Côte d’Ivoire has closed its borders to Ghana, prevented movement of vehicles across the border that bounds Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire to the west.

The movement of goods from Côte d'Ivoire through Ghana to other countries in the West-Africa sub-region signals burgeoning prospects in intra-Africa trade, which currently accounts for about 10% of the total volume of trade on the continent.

According to an official of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Organisation (ALCO), who gave her name as Harriet, the pothole ridden road caused the accident of the articulated truck, which was overloaded with cola nuts.

She said the bad nature of the road has consistently caused many accidents on the road that links Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and appealed to governments of the two countries to fix the road.
