Congestion in Accra is killing economy- Okyenhene

Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II says it is imperative that government relocate some of the ministries out of the Greater Accra Region to fast track the nation's development.

To him, the congestion in the capital makes life extremely unbearable for residents, stressing that it is about time government took steps to reverse the trend.

The respected traditional ruler said this at an IDEG public lecture on “Sustainable Governance”.

He added that over the years, professionals, including teachers, have refused to accept postings to the rural areas because all administrative centers have been centered in Accra at the detriment of other regions.

“Move [at least 10] ministries out of Accra as a first step in decongesting Accra. What is the Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture doing in Accra?” the traditional ruler quizzed.

It was in this direction that Okyenhene emphasized that the congestion situation that has bedeviled Accra for long can only be solved if the government spread national resources adequately across the country.

He added: “It will also lead to the creation of jobs because citing strategic ministries at the countryside will attract more people to shift from the perception that Accra is always the best place to seek employment.”.
