Contractors working on GETFund projects in the Central Region have made an urgent appeal to President John Evans Atta Mills to use his good offices to facilitate the payment of their money to ease financial difficulties confronting them.

Mr. Kweku Aggrey, Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Contractors Association who made the appeal at Gomoa Aboso in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region, said currently, most of the contractors were facing financial problems due to the non-payment for projects done for the government.

The contractors said the delayed payment of their money had had serious negative repercussions on their businesses and their families.

He said majority of the projects the contractors executed were classroom blocks to replace schools under trees.

Mr. Aggrey who is also the Managing Director (MD) of Efana Construction Firm based at Gomoa Ekwamkrom, said most of the projects had been completed while others had reached various stages of completion.

He regretted that the situation had compelled some contractors to suspend work on some of the projects.

He said some cheques given to contractors by the GET-Fund last year as part-payment for work done failed to go through.

Mr. Aggrey said, this necessitated contractors to stage a demonstration at the GET-Fund Secretariat in Accra in March this year, and that most contractors were facing legal action by their bankers for failing to pay back loans granted them.

Mr. Aggrey therefore appealed to President Mills to intervene to enable contractors to overcome their present financial problems.**
