Cost of living rising in Koforidua

The Koforidua Municipality is faced with consistent rising of prices of commodities over the first two quarters of the year.

The situation has raised some concerns throughout the municipality and many people are complaining as prices of almost everything from foodstuffs to manufactured goods keep raising almost every day.

A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the Koforidua 31st December and the Central markets showed that prices of items have shoot up drastically.

Five kilograms of Sultana rice that used to sell at GH¢25.00 is now GH¢30.00, five kilograms of special rice that was sold at GH¢16.00 is now selling at GH¢24.00, a cup of perfume rice ranges from GH¢3.00 to GH¢3.50 depending on the brand but it used to sell at GH¢2.00 and 2.50.

The small size of ideal milk that used to be sold at GH¢ 2.00 is now GH¢ 2.50, a gallon of cooking oil is now sold at GH¢27.00 instead of Gh¢16.00 and a tin of milo that used to sell at GH¢9.00 is now selling at GH¢11.00.

The price of 400 grams tinned tomatoes is sold at GH¢3.00 instead of GH¢2.50, a 175 grams pepsodent is sold at GH¢3.50 instead of GH¢3.00 and a packet of toilet roll of ten rolls that used to be sold for GH¢7.00 is now GH¢11.00.

The cost of a small tuber of yam is now Gh¢3.00 instead of GH¢ GH¢2.00, a basket of tomatoes is now sold at GH¢70.00 or 80.00 depending on the sizes of the tomatoes instead of GH¢50.00 and 60.00, a bunch of plantain is now sold at GH¢9.00 to 10.00 depending on the size, it used to be sold at GH¢5.00 and Gh¢6.00.

The constant escalation of prices is becoming a worry as consumers continue to complain bitterly.
