DCE calls for dry season farming

Mr Mumuni Shiraz Ibn Yacin, Central Gonja District Chief Executive (DCE) has appealed to farmers in the district to embrace dry season farming as the surest way of helping to address the problem of food scarcity during dry season.

He said the Central Gonja District had been blessed with a lot of natural resources including vast fertile land, which the people should take advantage and till the land to improve the economic status of the people.

Mr Yacin made the appeal on Tuesday during the first ordinary meeting of the assembly meeting to deliberate on developmental issues and problems facing the area and to adopt measures of addressing them.

He said farming was the fastest way of fighting hunger and stressed the need for dry season farming, which the assembly was ready to support farming saying, “We are interested in working out to improve the income levels of community members and we ready to assist interested farmers especially women”.

He said women who are into shea nut picking would also be assisted with gloves and wellington booths and advised the youth to form groups and in venture into all-year-round farming to improve their living conditions.

Mr Yacin, However, advised the people to desist the habit of bush burning to save the environment and economic trees and also ensure that their farm products were not destroyed.

On development projects, the DCE announced that more than 20 different projects initiated by the government dotted in the district were ongoing and gave the assurance that development would be brought to the doorsteps of the people in the area.

He said the major ingredient for the development of the area was peace and unity saying, “We need to strive harder to ensure that the current prevailing peace in our district is maintained so that we will get the needed development”.

Mr Yacin appealed to the youth and opinion leaders in the district to commit themselves towards fostering lasting peace so that a lot of investors would be relocated there to create jobs for the people.
