The Minister of Works and Housing is requesting an additional GH¢200 million to expedite the first phase of the Akosombo Dam spillage resettlement programme.

This request follows government’s initial allocation of GH¢200 million to support the resettlement of communities affected by the dam’s spillage.

During a recent stakeholder engagement on the spillage, Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, Chief Director of the Ministry, highlighted the need for more funds to cover consultancy fees and land compensation, which are critical components of the resettlement process.

“We projected about 600 million cedis to do the project, but currently we have 200 million cedis. So if you have to do it in a year, it means that we need 600 million to be released for the resettlement process,” Rev. Osei stated.

He further explained that if the resettlement process extends beyond a year, additional funding will be necessary.

“If it’s going to be two years, that means that we need an additional 200 to make it four so that we can fast-track it and do it in two years. If it is to be three years more, then we need 200 million every year. So we are asking for additional funds if we have to do it in a year,” he elaborated.
