Apam (C/R), May 11, GNA - The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport organisations have been urged to compel their members to display the list of lorry fares on their vehicles to avoid cheating.
Mr. Stephen Agyei-Yeboah, Public Education Officer of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) expressed regret that drivers and their mates were not complying with the order to increase their fares by five per cent, following the upward adjustment in the prices of fuel, announced about two weeks ago and were taking more. He stated that drivers and their mates were charging between 10 and 25 per cent over the old fares, which was creating a lot of misunderstanding between them and passengers and said that it was not enough to ask drivers to increase fares by five per cent without any monitoring to ensure that they complied.
Mr Agyei-Yeboah noted that drivers and the mates were now running short distances and calculating fares from "town-to-town" to maximise their profit.
He suggested that Police Dispatch-Riders could be of great help in ensuring that the approved fares were charged if they were asked to include such an exercise in their normal patrol duties on the highways to check the exploitation of passengers by drivers and their mates. 11 May 06
