ECG to tie workers remuneration to performance

Kumasi, Feb 1, GNA - The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has decided to tie workers remuneration to performance as part of measures to enhance productivity, Mr David Vukania, Director of Customer Services, has said.

He said that a new condition of service approved by the Board of Directors to be implemented soon "relates remuneration to performance". Mr Vukania was speaking at the first joint Best Employee Awards ceremony for the Ashanti East and West regions of the Company in Kumasi at the weekend.

He described ECG's revenue collection last year as "poor" and said there was the need for the adoption of a new work culture, which would ensure that workers "apply themselves diligently while on duty".

Mr Vukania advised the workers to desist from misusing ECG's resources and money received from customers, warning that, "The disciplinary authorities will not hesitate to sanction offenders".

He said it was important that the company collected more revenue so that it could pay in full for the power bought from the Volta River Authority (VRA) and have surplus to cover its own operations. Mr Vukania enumerated projects initiated to help meet the needs of the fast growing customers of the company who would insist on their rights.

These include the installation of new equipment for efficient fault management, engineering and geographic systems and computerisation of its operations.

Mr Manu Marfo, Regional Director, Ashanti East, noted that the split of the region into two had led to low revenue collection but gave the assurance that adequate measures had been put in place to improve the situation.

Mr Sampson Agyapong, Konongo District Technical and Commercial Officer, was adjudged the overall best worker and was given five million cedis.

Twelve other workers also received cash awards.
